Task 1
For this class, Izzy taught us the basics of cinematography. This includes many things but proved to be a good refresher for me. Our first task was to create a panel from one of the prompts provided. The one I chose was “running away from a monster”.

MY DECISION MAKING: I decided to start off by drawing the compositional guides. This is important as it can also help portray the intended emotion, which is terror, that’s why I angled the lines. I wanted to portray the emotion of the character the most which is the reason why I decided to have him be the biggest element, which meant that I can portray his facial expressions, sweat and body language. then decided to draw the monster but I made a decision to introduce a tertiary character who had fallen. I placed the tertiary character in a manner in which the eye is led from the monster to the character running away.
TO IMPROVE: Izzy gave me some very useful criticism which was to move the house slightly to the left to make the monster stand out more.
Task 2
Izzy decided to help us explore observational drawing. This is very useful as it helps get rid of subconscious biases when drawing from life. Here are my drawings.

FINAL IMPRESSIONS: I enjoyed doing this as an I love drawing, I believe this was all just a warmup for our next task.
Task 3
For this task, we were asked to create a storyboard. The only requirement was that it had to start at a cafe and have an argument. I created a simple mindmap to think of ideas.

I created a rough draft of the storyboard. I learnt many things creating this draft such as how to escalate a story and how to start one.

Task 4
We were tasked with producing 10 location drawings. As someone who draws from life regularly, this was pretty easy. I felt like I have captured life at South Bank effectively.

Final Task
For the final task, we had to create a story based on one of our location drawings.

When doing the locations, the weather was baltic. It’s disheartening that people live in that cold so I made mine about homelessness. The homeless man is introduced as shivering, with a cold runny nose to portray his coldness. The sign reveals his homelessness which is made effective due to the contrast between it and the stripy bench. The second shot is a POV of a hot drink being offered to the guy. I used pathetic fallacy by adding the sun to portray the warmth of the moment whilst also leading the eye towards the cup. The final shot is the guy relaxing on a bench as he is no longer cold. Such a simple act can change someone’s moment.
